Alopecia

Talk to me.

Alopecia is a common autoimmune disorder which causes your hair to fall out. It can happen on the scalp (skin on the top of the head), eyebrows, eyelashes, or other parts of the body. When someone has alopecia, her hair may fall out in small patches or can completely fall out.

Hair loss in general can be both scary and cause worry, but it's important to know that alopecia is not contagious and does not make you sick.

There are different types...

Alopecia can show up in a few different forms. Alopecia can be split into 4 different types:

1. Diffuse alopecia areata

2. Alopecia areata totalis

3. Alopecia areata universalis

4. Ophialsis alopecia areata

How do I know if my hair loss is alopecia?

If you notice hair loss or bald patches, it's a good idea to see a doctor. They will examine your scalp and ask about your medical history. Sometimes, the doctor may need to do a blood test or a scalp biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. It's important to remember that alopecia can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender.
