Female infertility

The Top Line

When a couple is unable to concieve or get pregnant after 12 months of having sex without any form of contraception (i.e. birth control) when the female is 35 or younger, infertility will be evaluated.

However, if the woman in the couple is 36+ years of age, infertility will be questioned much sooner (after 6 months of regular sex without being able to get pregnant).

The term subfertility is also used for couples who are trying to conceive when they have not been able to get pregnant yet, but they have also not been proven to have any specific physical issues that would be causing the infertility.

How can I get checked?

Because infertility affects a couple, both the male and female should be tested for things that might be causing the couples' infertility, and then the specialist will determine a plan of treatment from there. Going through the steps of defining and treating infertility can cause a lot of emotional strain to a couple, so it's also important that the specialist is able to evaluate mental health along the way.

There are many tests used by an infertility doctors to determine the cause of the infertility. The tests might include

  • physical exams
  • a semen analysis
  • an ovulatory function test
  • assessment of ovarian reserve
  • measurement of Day 3 FSH and CCCT
  • measurement of anti-müllerian hormone
  • test of fallopian tube patency
  • a hysterosalpingogram
  • a hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography
  • an assessment of the uterine cavity

Most of the long-named tests above are testing for different parts and functions of the female reproductive system, therefore the female will have to go through the process of having these done.

Once the medical professional has the results, they will assess their findings and determine the best way to treat the specific issue that might be at play.
