Oral thrush

Talk to me.

Oral thrush is a fungal infection that is caused from a fungus called Candida. Oral thrush can also commonly be known as a yeast infection of the mouth or esophagus.

This fungus can normally live in the mouth, throat, gut and vagina without causing any symptoms, however the fungus can grow and cause an infection in the same areas.

It is unlikely that healthy adults will get oral thrush, and it is more common in babies younger than 1 month old.

Who's more at risk?

Adults that do contract oral thrush might have done so because they

  • wear dentures
  • smoke
  • have diabetes
  • have cancer
  • have HIV/AIDs
  • take antibiotics or corticosteroids
  • take other medications that can cause dry mouth

Especially in areas such as the esophagus, if a candidiasis infection occurs it is most likely from a weakened immune system, including people living with HIV/AIDs and people suffering from blood cancers.

I have it. What now?

Once diagnosed, it is fairly easy to treat. You can get rid of oral thrush with antifungal medicine which is applied orally for 1-2 weeks.
