Pelvic inflammatory disease can infect the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and even other organs in the pelvic region.
Who's more at risk?
The disease is most likely to occur in women who are having sex because it can cause the bacteria to travel from the vagina up to the uterus (womb).
Symptoms of PID can be mild and some women do not experience any symptoms at all.
I have it. Now what?
If PID is caught early before the infection is severe, it can be treated with antibiotics for two weeks.
When PID is untreated it can scar the fallopian tubes, making it difficult for an egg to travel from the overy into the womb which can lead to both ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
