PMS

Tell me more.

PMS, which many women have heard of and have experienced, is short for premestrual syndrome, in which a woman might experience negative physical and mental symtpoms associated with her period.

This might include

  • depression
  • irritability
  • anxiety
  • breast pain
  • bloating
  • headaches

These must occur in the days leading up to your period and do not exist during other times in a woman's monthly cycle for them to be classified as symptoms of PMS.

In some cases a woman might experience more extreme symptoms such as high levels of anger and irritability which might later be diagnosed as PMDD. PMDD stands for premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

What can I do to reduce my side effects?

Treatment might include things you can do at home such as exercise, meditation, therapy, medication (mild pain relievers) and either starting or changing the pill.

There are also a number of vitamins that have been recommended to ease mild PMS including primrose oil, vitamin B6, vitamin E, calcium and magnesium, however results of their effectiveness vary.
