Thrush
What is it?
Thrush, also called a yeast infection, typically affects the vaginal region in women, however it is not considered an STD (sexually trasmitted disease).
Who's more at risk?
It is a fungal infection that can be caused from a variety of things such as
- certain antibiotics
- being pregnant
- being diabetic
- a weakened immune system
- oral contraceptives
- hormone therapy
- family genetics - some women are more genetically prone to have them that others
How do I know if I have it?
While sometimes there might not be any symptoms at all, often it will cause itchiness around the vagina, discharge that appears thick, white and odor free, and pain while peeing or during sex. If you have these symptoms, either doing an at home test or seeing your gynecologist will help you determine if you have thrush.
How can I avoid getting thrush in the future?
During the reproductive years, most women will have at least 1 to 2 episodes of a yeast infection. To avoid having many episodes of yeast infections, it has been advised to limit
- wearing tight undergarments
- douching
- hot tubs and hot baths
- using scented products in the area such as bubble bath, pads and tampons
- use of antibiotics for colds and other minor illnesses
- staying in a wet swimsuit or damp workout gear after use
